Paths to culturally responsive instruction: Preservice teachers’ readiness beliefs

Abstract

In an attempt to better understand and monitor preservice teachers’ perceptions of their ability to provide culturally responsive instruction, this study was designed to assess culturally responsive dispositions of students in similar courses required in their respective teacher education programs. Although there are several related terms in the extant literature, this study utilizes the following definition of culturally responsive pedagogy (Siwatu, 2007): An approach to teaching and learning that (1) uses students’ cultural knowledge,… experiences, prior knowledge, and individual learning preferences as a conduit to facilitate the teaching-learning process,…(2) incorporates students’ cultural orientations to design culturally compatible classroom environments,…(3) provides students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned using a variety of assessment techniques,…(4) provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to function in mainstream culture while simultaneously helping students maintain their cultural identity, native language, and connection to their culture (cultural enrichment and competence).
