More than Skills: Helping Prospective Teachers Deepen Their Knowledge of Literacy Development and Instruction
Abstract
From Introduction: The study presented here used book clubs (McMahon & Raphael, 1997) as a way to improve prospective teachers’ understandings of how to provide literacy instruction to diverse students. Book clubs provided prospective teachers the opportunity to regularly read, write, and discuss their understandings related to literacy instruction for diverse students. The following questions were examined: 1.What do teachers learn about providing literacy instruction to diverse students though their participation in professional book clubs? 2.How do the understandings teachers develop in their book clubs inform their vision of what literacy instruction might look like in their future classrooms? Study begins on page 171 in the yearbook.
