Are they ready to teach students how to do research? An examination of secondary teacher education programs
Abstract
Background for the Study: Current understanding of reading and writing has evolved from establishing a theoretical connection between the two processes to emphasizing the role context plays in shaping reading comprehension and the writing production (Greene & Ackerman, 1995). In the first section of this paper, research is discussed related to the complex combination of reading and writing strategies Teaching Research in Teacher Preparation 145 required when students research a topic. Next, attention will be focused on the disciplines (science, social studies, mathematics, or English) in which students are conducting research and how these disciplines provide a context that influences the research process and the product (Greene & Ackerman, 1995; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). This article begins on page 144 in the yearbook.

Research Questions
examine secondary teacher preparation in one state to understand how prospective teachers across the disciplines were prepared to teach their
secondary students to do research.
